When The Towel Drops Vol 1 | Italy
2016. Performance
The performance reveals the official justifications behind the censorship of femininity and expressions of sexuality from publicly viewed cinema in Italy during the 1950s and 1960s. The performance is accompanied by a video of film scenes censored out of publicly viewed cinema during this time.
The performance brings into the foreground, and circulates into the public frame, the hidden ‘face’ of the cultural gatekeepers of this time – an all-male body responsible for deliberating and sanctioning the censorship of films such as Ingmar Bergman’s Brink of Life, Pier Pasolini’s Love Meetings and Guido Malatesta’s La Notte Brava. By inviting 18 female artists, journalists and curators to participate in the performance, Radha May reaches back in time and disrupts this male deliberation.
